Here’s what’s on my mind: COP17 might follow a familiar pattern: speeches, lofty goals, and photos of ministers vowing to “fight land degradation.” The diagnosis will be repeated, perhaps with even more complex language. And, as before, little will change. Because the issue wasn’t ever a lack of understanding. What’s missing, then, isn’t ambition. It’s a global industry—one that’s actually designed to match the scale of the problem, not the small, scattered projects we have now.
